Maintaining your bathroom

We all know that if we don’t regularly maintain our cars, they will end up covered in rust and eventually break down. Your bathroom also needs regular maintenance – both small and large – so that you can enjoy it for longer.

Small maintenance tips for your bathroom

Cleaning the bathroom regularly prevents the build up of those unsightly deposits. Some cleaning tasks can be quick while others take a little more time, but should still be done on a regular basis, such as cleaning the shower drain or channel. The hair trap is easy to remove and clean, but the drain or channel must also be thoroughly cleaned from time to time, otherwise soap residues or other dirt can prevent the shower water from draining properly.

Fast water drainage

If you are already cleaning the drain, don’t forget to clean the traps at the same time. People with long hair are very familiar with the problem of clogged drains. Their hair gets caught in the drain, making it difficult for the water to flow out. While it is quite easy to remove the washbasin trap if necessary, it is not possible to do the same in a shower or bathtub without dismantling it first. Although YouTube has a host of good (and not so good) ideas, we recommend fishing out the hair with a long pair of tweezers. This will not damage the traps or pipes and saves unnecessary repair costs. The overflow hole on the washbasin should also be cleaned regularly. Spray a standard cleaning agent into the hole and leave it to work. This will prevent bad odours and scaling.

Big maintenance tips

If the toilet flush keeps on running, it could be a sign that dirt is blocking the flush valve. The valve is installed with a silicone seal over the outlet at the bottom of the cistern. Under normal circumstances, the valve blocks the outlet. If dirt, such as deposits from the cistern, gets lodged between the seal and the drain hole, it can block the flush valve.

Be careful!

Please note that you are fully responsible for the maintenance tasks performed and are liable for any damage caused. This is a possibility because most brackets are made of plastic and can break off or become damaged if handled incorrectly. It is usually not necessary to clean the inside of the cistern. In fact, doing so might cause large pieces of incrustations to come loose and clog the cistern. In the worst-case scenario, the plumber then needs to demount the entire toilet. Take care not to break anything when removing the trap. As the old adage goes, look before you leap – or in this case turn! And always call the plumber if in any doubt.

If you don’t give your car a regular service, it will end up falling apart because of rust. A thorough service in the bathroom also helps to ensure long-lasting pleasure. It starts off with cleaning the surfaces of the ceramic appliances and taps, then maintaining the shower drain or shower channel, all the way through to cleaning the installed cistern.

The Trap

If you are already in the process of cleaning the drain, you may as well clean the trap at the same time. Blocked drains are a common problem – particularly for people with long hair. The hair collects in the drain and can cause a blockage, preventing the water from draining away. While it is relatively simple to remove and clean the trap on a washbasin, in the case of a shower or bathtub it is impossible without removing the tray or tub. We thus recommend you fish out the hair with long tweezers. That way you don’t damage the trap or pipes and you save repair costs. You should also regularly clean the overflow hole in the washbasin. To do so, spray standard cleaning agent – containing acetic acid or citric acid – into this hole as well and leave it to take effect for a while. This stops unpleasant odours and limescale deposits.
